Legal Status
The Association for Banská Štiavnica ’91 is a charitable organization and is not aligned with any political party or activity, and is independent of any political influence. The Association is a successor of the former Foundation for Banská Štiavnica ’91 which was registered on June 25th, 1991. On October 16th, 1997, the change of the legal status and name was registered.
Mission
The realization of concrete projects contributing to the process of physical and moral regeneration of the World Heritage Town of Banská Štiavnica towards the goal of preserving and revitalizing its cultural heritage.
Overview of Selected Past Projects
- Organized photographic exhibition for Roland Photo Club, Bratislava, entitled "Banská Štiavnica '88 - '91", 1991,
- Secured financing for the study "Cultural-Historical Topography of the Town of Banská Štiavnica", 1991-93,
- Supported by the participants of the World Monuments Fund conference in Banská Štiavnica, 1992, the Foundation for Banská Štiavnica ’91 initiated the rescue of a Renaissance-Baroque burgher house at No. 5, Remeselnícka Street, Banská Štiavnica, from imminent demolition, 1992,
- Secured financing for the project of the children's playground, Drieňová, Banská Štiavnica, 1993,
- Collaborated in the preparation and production of the the "Fairy-Tale Forest" children’s' theater at Antol Manor House, 1993, 1994, and the "Fairy-Tale Castle" children’s theater, held at the Old Castle, Banská Štiavnica, 1995,
- Collaborated in the preparation and production of the theatrical event "Passion Play", held at Kalvaria (Way of the Cross) pilgrimage site in Banská Štiavnica, 1995,
- Organized seminar "Self-help Revitalization of Historic Buildings Using the Dutch Experience as a Model", in cooperation with Het Veem Association, Amsterdam, 1995,
- Completed the transfer of the ownership of the house No. 5, Remeselnícka Street, Banská Štiavnica, into the hands of the Foundation for Banská Štiavnica ’91, 1995,
- Organized beneficial concert at the Slovak Philharmonic Concert Hall in Bratislava to raise funds for the restoration of the house No. 5, Remeselnícka Street, Banská Štiavnica, 1996,
- Raised funds and organized the restoration of artistic decoration in the house No. 15, Holy Trinity Square, Banská Štiavnica, owned by the municipality, 1997-1999,
- Organized international summer youth workcamp for restoration of the house at the No. 5, Remeselnicka Street, and the ruins of the former Dominican Monastery, Banská Štiavnica, 1998, 1999,
- Organized workshop with the presentations of the Slovak participants at the international ICCROM courses "Conservation of Architectural Surfaces" and "Conservation of Wood", 1999,
- Organized international summer youth workcamp for restoration of the house No. 5, Remeselnicka Street, and the house No. 11, Holy Trinity Square, Banská Štiavnica, 2000.
Ongoing Projects:
The Association for Banská Štiavnica ’91 is currently:
- Supporting the initiative for reinhabiting the centre of Banská Štiavnica, since 1996,
- Leading iniciative towards raising public awareness against destruction of the heritage values in Banská Štiavnica, since 1998,
- Establishing a workshop for practical restoration of wood architectural elements, since 1999,
2000
- Raised funds and is organizing the restoration of artistic decoration in the house No. 11, Holy Trinity Square, Banská Štiavnica, owned by the civic association Residences in the Town Centre, grant awarded by The Headley Trust, London, UK, since 2000,
- Raised funds for the project “Public Involvement in The Planning Process in the Region of Banská Štiavnica“, grant awarded by the Royal Dutch Embassy in Slovakia,
2001
- Preparing the 4th international summer youth workcamp, Banská Štiavnica, 2001 (this project has been included in the European Heritage Campuses Programme, supported by the European Commission),
2002
- Co-organizing and coordinating the international workshop for craftsmen “Materials, techniques and Technologies in the Preservation of the built Heritage”, (in cooperation with the National Board for Monuments and Sites Preservation, grant awarded to the main organizer by the World Heritage Centre, Paris), May 2002,
2003
- Co-operation and coordination the preparing of the project for “Training and Education Centre for Craftsmen for Improving the preservation and Development of Banská Štiavnica) together with the german organisation of the E.T.E. - Bonn (Ecological Tourism in Europe), supported by E.T.E. Bonn and ABS´91, 2003
- Organizing of the course “Consolidation of the façade plaster” - bilateral cooperation with the training centre in austrian Mauerbach – the training of students of the local High School of S. Mikovini, consolidating of the historical plaster layers of the façade of the building at Remeselnícka no. 5, supported by Bundesdenkmalamt Austria, October 2003

- Co-operating on the education of cultural heritage preservation importance for the students of Faculty of Architecture of the Slovak University of Technology, supported by the MiInistry of Culture of Slovak republic, 2004,
- Co-operating on the international workshop for students of architecture (German, French, Slovak) – the theme was “urban conservation plan in Banská Štiavnica”, supported by the grant of Faculty of Architecture of SUT, 2004,

- Organizing the international workshop for craftsmen “Lime and Lime Technogies in the Preservation of the Built Heritage“, supported by the Ministry of Culture of Slovak Republic, September 2005,

- Organizing the international course and seminar for craftsmen and experts´ seminar “Doors and Windows in Built Heritage Conservation”, September 2006, grant awarded by The Headley Trust, London, UK
